Care and maintenance of pine furniture

Pine furniture is mainly used as patio or garden furniture. Proper care and maintenance is required to sustain its classic look and improve its durability.

Pine is a pale, knotted soft wood with a wide, straight grain. It is widely grown in Europe and even in India some of the hilly regions have its plantation. It is widely used in making kitchen tables and chairs and furniture which are meant to be painted.

Proper care and maintenance is required to maintain pine furniture. It must be treated with a preservative to prevent decay. Quick weather changes make it prone to decay. It must be coated with water resistant, stain resistant material to preserve it. Protective oil is used to prevent it from decaying. It is brushed over it evenly to form a protective layer over it. At home you can prepare a solution which you can brush yourself to clean it properly.

•    Mix one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of gentle dishwashing liquid and 6 cups of water and brush it with soft bristle.
•     Wash it of and dry it completely.
•    Do not use any strong detergent or spray containing aerosol or products which contains silicon.
•    You can also give a shine to it by rubbing block wax which is not perfumed thoroughly and then taking the most of it out by rubbing with a soft dry cloth.

Avoid exposing furniture to direct heat like hot pots or grill or too much direct sunlight or too much dampness. Avoid plastic covers for a long period of time on the furniture because plastic discolors the furniture and if it gets stick to it spoils the polish of it. In extreme climate it is advisable to put them indoors. Regular repainting and stain resistance polish is required to maintain its glory.
